Added Feature
To speed up your game play, you can hold down the SHIFT key while clicking a navigation direction. This will skip the animated paths and take you right to your requested destination. We recommend that you allow the animations to play until you are familiar with the "terrain" in an environment. They might provide some clues and sometimes they are really cool to watch.
Macintosh Installation
1. If your computer has an external CD-ROM drive, turn it on first and then turn on the computer.
2. Insert "Chaos" into the CD-ROM drive with the printed side facing up.
3. Drag the system folder items to your system folder as instructed on the folder icons. If you already have the same version of an extension, you do not need to re-install it.
4. Drag "Chaos" and/or "Chaos-Turbo" to your hard drive. The "turbo" version of the application allows for faster game play on faster systems. This version can be used if you have a PowerPC system or an '040 with more than 12 megs of RAM. On slower systems, this version may slow down navigation speed.
5. Restart your computer if you installed extensions.
Running "Chaos"
1. In the memory control panel, make sure that Virtual Memory is turned OFF.
2. In the sharing setup control panel, make sure that File Sharing is turned OFF.
(If you needed to change the above settings, you must restart in order for the changes to take effect)
3. In the monitors control panel, select "thousands" if your system allows. If not, select "256 colors."
4. Double-click on the "Chaos" icon (the CD must be in the CD-ROM drive to play).
Optimizing Performance
If "Chaos" isn't playing well, or you have a limited amount of RAM, there are several things you might want to do:
-- Quit all other applications before running Chaos.
-- Disable Appletalk. Go to the Chooser under the Apple menu and click "inactive" next to appletalk. Close the window.
-- Change the RAM allocation of the application before launching it. Click on the Chaos application to select it. Choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Info Window, increase the preferred size of the application as much as your system allows. To see how much free RAM you have, make sure you aren't running any applications and select "About This System" from the Apple menu. The value that appears next to Largest Unused Block is how much free RAM you currently have.
-- Free up more RAM. Suppress all extensions and startup items that you don't need to run Chaos by moving them into the "Extensions (disabled)" folder within your System Folder. If you use the Extensions Manager control panel, create a settings file for running Chaos that only includes CD-ROM and QuickTime extensions. This will allow you to easily manage extensions without moving them manually. Restart your computers for your changes to take effect.
-- Lower your monitor resolution to 256 colors/640x480 pixels.
